  This is a must watch for any admirers of old-school bjj. Coach Haueter is an OG of bjj in North America, and this instructional builds a soul-crushing quarter top game. Have yet to watch the bottom game part of the series, but am sure it will hold up.

• Turtle both from the top and the bottom

  This instructional teaches techniques for the turtle, which is referred to as the quarter guard, with approximately half of the instructional initially covering the top position and the balance the bottom. The instructional is taught by Chris Haueter with the assistance of two of his black belts - Melissa Haueter and Sam Kressin, who also teach several chapters. This approach of using multiple instructors in my opinion works well as it adds variety and assists in making the instructional more interesting to watch. The instructional is 2 hours long. The content for the top position includes: a series of drills for control; how to turn the opponent onto their back with options for submissions; noting that there is a constant focus on control (i.e., “The art is the art of control, control, control until a submission happens” – C.H.); and the submissions focus on the neck, shoulders and arms. Chris Haueter starts the bottom section of the instructional by advising turtle bottom is not a resting position and your focus should be on working to get out the position by either 1 reversing it, 2 recovering your guard or 3 standing up. The content for the bottom position follows this advice plus dealing with an opponent who is focused on your neck and an opponent who is trying to take your back. Bottom techniques deal with your opponent controlling you from different angles (i.e., back, side & front). As usual with Chris Haueter instructionals money has been spent on professional editing and a skilled camera operator; good lighting; and excellent sound recording. The camera is mobile as it moves to get the best angles. Consequentially the quality of the video is excellent and for me a pleasure to watch. If only all instructors would do the same. In summary, this instructional is dense with information. Some chapters cover several techniques and there is a lot to learn. As with previous Chris Haueter instructionals there are references to “always think street”, which is a good thing. If you are looking at improving your understanding of the turtle this is a great instructional to buy.

  Definitely a great combination of practical techniques and a pressure game. There is some infatuation at my gym with the sport side with speed and athleticism. Looks cool. This instructional has some cool moves but designed more for the control freak.
