the video is really good. it shows a lot of uncommon stuff for bjj guys, but they actually work. lot of "lateral thinking" here... but it's perfect if your goal is to surprise the opponents.
Jake Shannon shows some great CACC takedowns. What Jake shows in this video is straight out of the Great Billy Robinson and Karl Gotchs playbook. Love it!
This is one of my favorite instructionals. I always love to hear Jakes knowledge on the history of American/European grappling and catch wrestling, but he is legit technician too! He covers some more dynamic takedowns(like throws), how to drill them safely, and how to execute them in a way that puts less stress on your body. His version of these moves decreases the chance of injuring your opponent(if that is your intention), and takes some momentum out of the movement, so your opponent can't scramble top position after the throw. This was a game changer for me, because I would never even try throws or drops in training, because I was afraid that I would hurt my training partners(accidentally spiking someone on their head) or myself(back issues). But Jake shows how to do these techniques relying more on control and leverage, rather than dynamic athleticism. Jake and his partner do a great job of taking the time to explain things conceptually, while giving you a multitude of techniques. Some of these are more high percentage than others(fireman's carry, lateral drop, hype/uchimata, low single), but all the weird ones are super cool too(and couple of them actually work WAY better than you'd expect). The intense grunting that catch wrestlers engage in is also always amusing. You can't go wrong with this one.
Amazing eye to detail and instructional love it
Great instructional for all levels. And really helpful for BJJ., Ll & MMA too... And yes, fancy technique names😎
Jake Shannon is an OG of Catch. He has been promoting Catch as catch can forever, and really knows his stuff inside and out. For anyone looking to improve their takedown game that isn't standard Freestyle Wrestling or Judo, please check this one out. You won't regret it!
Great instructional. The techniques are well taught and easily implemented. The instructional provides an "off the shelf" takedown game and is great for those less confident in takedowns of those who are tall/mobile and need practical techniques that don't require speed and agility.
Great instructional dvd!
I will give you a teaser technique review without giving away the contents. When you see how a catch wrestlers counter an arm drag in this premium instructional, you will quickly invite your training partners to arm drag you because their backs will soon hit the mat. I have even figured out that I can use the catch counter to the arm drag to hit the Gazoni on the ground. After you see the inherent flaw in the traditional arm drag, you will then be taught the catch arm drag which is single leg city. Don't get me started with the catch Kouchi Gake when your opponent tries to straighten their leg in the single then the baseball slide if they sprawl and finally you get to see how a catch wrestler employs the dragon screw which is certainly less dramatic looking than the pro wrestling version, but it is uber effective. What I have just spit out in my snippet synopsis does not cover the half of the information imparted in this DVD. Please bring back Jake Shannon and Sam Kressin for more! I would also be highly interested in purchasing a release from Yuko Miyato with a translator if you wonderful people at BJJ Fanatics could pull that off. Anything from that Billy Robinson line!
Excellent video. Full of great details for catch wrestling. Highly recommended.
Fantastic intro to catch wrestling ! Recommend for any catch wrestlers or bjj guys
I love jiu-jitsu, don't get me wrong, but when I think about the various grappling sports, catch wrestling is the ruleset that is most interesting to me. I love seeing products like this that have an interest in catch-style rulesets - in addition to the martial philosophies behind catch. I hope this leads to more catch-based content here in the future!
As an avid fan of CACC style grappling I was immediately interested when I first saw this video was being released. Unfortunately CACC is an under-appreciated form of grappling but has a lot of useful techniques that can be incorporated into a well rounded grappling skillset. The relative scarcity of resources and dedicated schools/instructors compared to BJJ means that there is a risk of losing some of this knowledge so instructionals such as this one are exceptionally valuable. Luckily the contents of the video live up to this responsibility. Jake and Sam go through the techniques in detail and share lots of finer points that really help illustrate some of the key differences between CACC takedowns vs other grappling forms. Their reverence in carrying on the lessons from mentor Billy Robinson is evident as is their passion for the art form. Whatever grappling martial art you train in you will find something of value in this video that you will be able to give yourself an edge. This is easily one of my favourite instructionals and hopefully the first of many.
Legit billy Robinson style catch wrestling. I can't recommend enough. Jake and Sam give details into Billy's catch philosophy. Thanks for sharing this information so it doesn't become lost.
