This instructional teaches a range of sweeps and back takes from closed guard bottom. The instructional is organised as follows: teaching how to firstly break posture with a focus on using your legs and using grip breaks; sweeps when the opponent is on his/her knees and covers pendulum, flower, scissor, hip bump, balloon and lapel; a series of back takes using arm drags; sweeps when the opponent is transitioning to their feet including the roger, ghost, flower and balloon; and sweeps when the opponent has successfully risen to their feet including double ankle pick, a series of muscle sweeps and the kiss of the dragon. If you didn’t know, the kiss of the dragon sweep is an interesting sweep that leads to the person on the bottom taking their opponent’s back as part of the sweep. This is a great instructional because these effective techniques are taught well and Giancarlo adds his own tweaks that make these techniques more effective and reliable. I have had much more success with these techniques since watching this instructional. I really like the hip bump sweep and I have watched many instructors teach this technique, even the great John Danaher and Giancarlo has a slightly different approach that for me has made a big difference. I have much more confidence attempting this sweep against all sized opponents. Giancarlo has clear and easily understood instructions for each technique. For each technique he runs through the technique multiple times, so you don’t miss anything. As expected, he shows the technique from different angles. Importantly he teaches how to read your opponent’s movements to determine the direction and timing of the sweep. Some people hold the view that the closed guard is boring and perhaps lame, but with good sweeping skills it is a good way to control a larger person and with effective sweeping skills is a gateway to a dominant position (e.g. mount or side control). Additionally, from closed guard you can take the back. Sound and picture quality are good. The angles of the technique displayed are appropriate. If you wish to improve your ability to either sweep your opponent or take their back from closed guard bottom, then this is a great instructional. I am confident that if you are spending any time in the closed guard bottom and provided that you take the time to absorb the material in this instructional it will make your rolling so much more fun. The instructional is 2 hours and 33 minutes long.
