I recently had the opportunity to delve into "Never Get Smashed: Side Control and Mount Escapes" by Gregor Gracie, and it has been a transformative experience for my BJJ journey. As a student at Professor Gregor Gracie's academy in Brooklyn, I've had the privilege of learning from him firsthand, and this course is a perfect reflection of his teaching style and expertise. The course is meticulously structured, covering a wide range of scenarios and techniques essential for escaping side control and mount positions. Gregor emphasizes the importance of remaining calm and focused, even in the most challenging situations, highlighting that defense is the most critical aspect of jiu-jitsu. He breaks down each technique into manageable parts, making it easy to understand and implement. For instance, he discusses the importance of hip movement and framing in escaping side control, and how to use the underhook to elevate the opponent over you. Additionally, he covers escaping the mount position, focusing on the hip escape technique and how to deal with different leg positions. The course also addresses various common scenarios that can arise during a match, such as dealing with an opponent who shifts their hip towards your head or hip, and how to counter these movements effectively. Gregor provides detailed explanations and demonstrations on how to break these locks and escape efficiently. Overall, "Never Get Smashed: Side Control and Mount Escapes" is a must-have for any BJJ practitioner looking to enhance their defensive skills. It's a comprehensive, well-structured, and expertly taught course that will undoubtedly elevate your game. Whether you're a beginner or an advanced practitioner, this course has something to offer. I highly recommend it to anyone serious about improving their BJJ skills.
ver good basics and solutions to adjustments in real time i enjoyed tutorial
This instructional (volume 1) commences with teaching how to safely position yourself in side control bottom and adopt an appropriate mindset to enable you to remain calm and composed. The primary side control escapes taught in this instructional include: underhook (Gregor’s favourite) and “hip escape” (i.e. moving your near side leg to the opponent underneath the opponent while moving your body approximately 90 degrees to a closed guard). The instructional provides lots of information on how to effectively and reliably gain the underhook. Volume 2 addresses escapes from scarf hold and reverse scarf hold and also provides some additional techniques to escape side control. Volume 3 addresses mount escapes including: identifying the appropriate mindset while being mounted and what needs to be done immediately (e.g. framing, positioning of your body, etc) to remain safe prior to escaping; the “hip escape” (aka a version of the elbow escape, commencing with using you own leg to lift the opponent’s leg to then allow you to move your bottom leg under their leg) is the first technique taught; several chapters address how to respond to the opponent who flattens their foot or crosses their legs to make it difficult to do the previous technique; how to escape the high mount; two techniques to address the technical mount; and the last two chapters teach the upa escape. The total runtime for this instructional is 1 hours and 30 minutes. Within the limitations of a fixed camera there are no notable issues with sound or video quality (e.g., range [a big tick], focus, or lighting). Gregor Gracie effectively teaches side control and mount escapes and discusses his own preferences and refinements to escapes. He discusses that there are two aspects, defensive skills and escaping skills, which are related but separate skills. He stressed the importance of timing and the importance of having solid defensive and escape skills, which together will allow you to remain calm while on the bottom. This instructional teaches a selective number of escape techniques, which is not a bad thing and also the benefit of combining escapes. Gregor Gracie provides the necessary detail to ensure that these escapes will work, if performed correctly, not just on same size opponents, but larger people (e.g. the underhook side control escapes emphasis moving yourself not the opponent). In my opinion, this is an easy instructional to watch and the techniques are effective.
Very good! This is one of the positions I'm most interested in, and this is one of the best instructionals I've seen on the subject.
Very helpful
It's good
Clear ideas repeated enough so it sinks in.
G. G. shows one main concept for 1. Escaping side control 2. Reguard from side control 3. Mount escapes via upa/trap and roll He is covering all main variations with a clear gameplan. His teaching is on point and easy to follow! Absolute must have!!!
different ideas to round up my game
Although the techniques are simple, they are effective. What I mean by this is that Gregor focuses on a deep dive for the underhood series and the knee-elbow escape. There are a few other techniques here and there, but these two make up the lion's share of what is taught. Overall, I am happy to have this video in my collection. I think Gregor teaches clearly and focus on simple but efficient Jiu-Jitsu. It reminds me of Roger Gracie-style Jiu-Jitsu: to the point and not overall philosophical. That is what drives me crazy about Danaher, Williams, etc.
This video serie delivers good quality advices about a lot of details regarding, for instance, the feet battle when mounted.
