Wow what a instructional. Gordon goes in extreme depth on all of recoveries and makes you understand why hardly anyone passes his guard; great bang for your buck for the amount of content.

They Shall Not Pass by Gordon Ryan. Got this to help address the weakest part of my game. Sooooo many lightbulb moments. I am focusing on one type of pass at a time. Glad I have this for the journey.

Great detail, insightful concepts and two almost too good looking people in the frame, great quality on every frame of this production. I do most gi, but this kind of tweaked my brain into som insights - from guard make sure to control ukes inside leg position. and as a passer in nogi, aim for north south position. (getting passed legs is one thing - but imo its difficult to control the initial side position in no gi...) onward on the journey! thanks alot!

Very organized and comprehensive instructional. If your already high level and have a solid open guard game the buy it. However if you don't have many tools from open guard i would recommend developing it before delving into this since you will probably feel lost in the beginning, as I did. Besides that you’ll get your money’s worth and Gordon Ryan has the resume to back up the effectiveness of what he teaches.

This instructional is better than attending a seminar as you can replay and breakdown the learned concepts and techniques as you apply it in your active sparring. This video are significantly improved my confidence in the concepts and techniques.

Guard retention is a complex subject where situations are dynamic and variations are endless due to choices made by both players. Gordon Ryan manages to give a clear, principle-based system for guard retention covering both seated and supine situations. Instead of talking about minute details of each passing position, he emphasises goals that both players are trying to achieve. Thinking in terms of goals helps in categorizing complex situations which occur in while passing and in quickly identifying what is the most important thing to do/focus on in order to retain guard. This way the student can go beyond the instructional by generalizing and applying these goals to new situations. Overall, this is a great instructional.
