• A techniques focused instructional

  This closed guard (GI) instructional by Bruno Bastos teaches a range of classic submissions and sweeps. It is a techniques focused instructional. The submissions taught include a comprehensive range of armbars, chokes including the triangle choke, wrist locks, kimura, omaplata, a toe hold, and a knee bar. Sweeps include the usual suspects: flower (which demonstrated appears to be a hybrid of the flower and the pendulum sweep), scissor, omaplata sweep, hip bump and for a standing opponent the muscle, back roll and tripod sweeps. Techniques are taught for situations when the opponent is either on their knees or standing in your closed guard. Additionally, Bruno Bastos teaches a back take using a two on one grip. This instructional has a total runtime of 2 hours and 8 minutes. The format of the instructional is for Bruno Bastos to firstly discuss and describe the technique and then he guides the viewer through the technique as it is demonstrated. I think this approach works well. The technique is repeated multiple times from different angles to the camera. As with many traditional instructionals the Uke is completely passive, so there are occasions where I thought it would really improve the instructional if some resistance could be shown in at least in one of the repetitions or using narrated rolling, as this would better demonstrate the necessary control required to undertake the technique successfully with someone other than a smaller passive partner. Additionally, I would have appreciated hearing Bruno Bastos’ insights about his closed guard tactics. The instructional has been filmed with a fixed camera. The quality of the video is good, as is the range and there are no issues with the microphone. The available previews are consistent with the whole instructional. In summary, this instructional effectively teaches a range of individual closed guard submission and sweeping techniques. I think the instructional would have been improved with more emphasis (i.e., discussion and particularly demonstration) being placed on how to effectively control a resisting opponent, including how to respond to the likely response from your opponent as you enter and progress each technique taught; and how to choose between techniques and link submissions together as part of a system. Additionally, my preference is for the Uke not to be significantly smaller or lighter than the instructor, particularly if sweeps are being taught and demonstrated.
