My stand up strategy thus far has been plan to get taken down or pull guard. Within a couple hours, those meaningless grips I used to have all of a sudden were given purpose. After understanding the purpose, my grips and takedowns improved drastically. John Danaher is my favorite instructer because of his ability to sytemize and effectively deliver information.
I was afraid of standing up, had no clue, after watching this now I'm no longer afraid, and now I know what I'm trying to do, thank you Mr. Danaher!
Awesome instructional. Very clear and easy to understand. Will definitely help with takedowns.
Another jewel by Danaher. Very comprehensive and detailed video.
This is a great intro to the standing game. I drilled this content and scored takedowns in all of my matches at my next tournament.
great instructional breaking down standing skills, some really good coverage off grip fighting ay yotsu and kenka yotsu, i have been using this for over 12 months and have significantly my standing game in the gi from this instructional
Brilliant for giving a new guy a clue about how rolling/matches work.
Just what you’re expect from Danaher...specific details and a deeper understanding for why you’re doing everything you do. Worth every penny.
Would recommend for sure
With my original training in karate, I was keen to better understand the standing side of BJJ and control the decent to the floor and start the ground game in a better position (just makes so much sense to me). This video spends a lot of time going over the precursor skills. Some of these I picked up very quickly with my background in standup sparring (e.g. stance, distance and movement). Others took a bit longer (e.g. removing strong grips and lining up the right position). All these are talked through in a lot of detail and demonstrated several times from different angles, which was very useful. The video also helped me quickly identify and exploit 'gifts' (i.e. to capitalize on mistakes made by training partners). Even before I finished the course I increased my success with takedowns and had a much clearer understanding of what I was trying to do. I am also more effective at countering attempts to take me down by reading my opponents better. I thoroughly recommend this video for anyone looking to develop there stand up skills.
