Great!
This instructional teaches Firas Zahabi’s “favourite re-guarding techniques” for coloured belts demonstrated in No-Gi, however in the commentary where appropriate he discusses how techniques may vary if you are wearing a Gi. The nature of the instructional is different to most with techniques/movements filmed and then the commentary has been added later by Fias Zahabi. This process allows the use of graphics (e.g., arrows, circles, etc) to be added to highlight various points. This is the sort of thing that he does on his You Tube channel. Not a bad thing, just different to other instructionals. The instructional is structured around key concepts and they are explored by using demonstrations. The techniques taught are not complicated and do not require you to be particularly flexible or athletic, so with practice you should be able to repeat them and improve your guard retention. Additionally, where it is logical to flow to a submission in the movement he does so (e.g., shotgun armbar, omoplata, triangle, etc), but the focus is not on teaching the submission. The instructional has a total runtime of 1 hour and 27 minutes. Video (quality including range and focus) and sound are good with no issues to be concerned about. The instructional appears to have been filmed with a fixed camera. The available previews are consistent with the whole instructional. Firas Zahabi demonstrates the techniques, which are repeated and filmed from different angles. As noted previously he then provides a narration which has been recorded after the filming. The narration includes the rationale for the movement and when appropriate links to the key concepts. In my opinion in this instructional using this type of narration works well. To me it feels like you are being coached. The content is logically organised and flows well. This will probably be an instructional that you will watch multiple times to get the most from it and the good thing is that it is not difficult to watch multiple times and it is not particularly long. However, while some people might like the format of this instructional (i.e., narration done after the filming) and that it is concise (noting that there is some assumed knowledge, as the target audience are coloured belts), it should be acknowledged that it is a relatively short instructional on the complex topic of guard retention.
Firas Zahabi is a fantastic BJJ teacher. Easy enough material to pick up right away but with enough depth to keep coming back for more.
Great instructional! Fries does an excellent job of explaining and demonstrating the basic techniques of pass prevention! I would buy additional instructionals by him.
Very good advice on guard retention and pass prevention by one of the best coaches out there.
Zahabi is a great instructor. He walks you through the fundamental concepts that explains why specific techniques work. This collection has helped me with my guard retention.
Absolutely amazing detail and instructions! I highly recommend this collection to anyone that want to add legit movement that helps to retain their guard!
I just watched four techniques and I already know that this instructional will be a game changer for me. Short, well explained, go direct to the point. Now I understand why I always heard « push the head », do this, do that, etc… Now it’s clear. Thank you coach Zahabi Patrick
Excellent resource for pass prevention and re-guarding techniques. Includes drills with suggested timelines. Multiple angles, multiple options, clear instruction. Zahabi's use of arrows and diagrams powerfully reinforce directions of attack, distances between the two players as well as lines of sight. I also really appreciate Zahabi's brevity - short, to the point, and done. Go practice.
Short but concise. Great detail on the techniques. He teaches the moves on a sports commentary style with highlights and pointers which I think is great so that you focus on the detail. Zahabi is one of the great teachers out there along with Danaher, Giles, etc. Will definitely buy all his collection.
This is a really nice collection of techiques/strategies for keeping your guard. Zahabi has a good way of showing all his techiques in slowmotion so you really see how the moves are performed.
Firas gets right into the material and clearly explains his technique. I like that he shows real time footage of him using the technique he’s teaching too
If you're looking how you can improve pass prevention this is to the point. Good review of what you should know with some advance concepts. I love how Firas pauses in certain positions and draws on the screen. Really helped me learn.
Firas Zarahabi goes straight to the point and shows you the effective techniques not to get your guard passed.
I bought this review on special. Very very easy to follow you can look at a couple of techniques and hit them immediately the night off when you are rolling. Professor Zahabi does not complicate things he keeps everything straight to the point. Well worth the money.
If you want a no fluff, straight to the point instructional, then Firas is your man. I’ve invested in several of his instructionals and while they are short in run time, they are densely packed with super effective, high level techniques but not to the point of overwhelming you. Moreover, you don’t have to sit through an 8 volume series where you pay an arm and a leg and the majority of it is spent talking. I also enjoy his Madden style to break down the techniques which make its way easier to retain. Aside from guys like Neil and Lachlan, he is my other favorite online instructor.
I wasn‘t sure if buying an instructional on my level would be worth it. But it is definitely! Zahabi is a phenomanal coach and explains the techniques and concepts very well. These techniques and concepts are pretty easy to learn and after some drilling time you will hit them in rolling, even as a white belt.
