Great video course
Systematically Attacking The Arm Bar by Gordon Ryan is exactly what the title promises—a championship-level, fully detailed approach to attacking armbars from multiple angles and positions rather than a scattered collection of flashy moves. Gordon covers everything from differences between top juji and bottom juji, grip mechanics, escape counters, to variations like quarter, three-quarter, and pillow/scissor armbars—all while explaining the why behind each choice. What stood out to me—and many in the community—is the depth of technical insight and problem-solving mindset Gordon brings. Viewers online rave about how his breakdowns go beyond just “here’s how to do it” to diagnose why certain armbar setups succeed and others fail, which is huge when you’re trying to actively increase finishes in live rolling. Highlights: Fantastic breakdown of armbar mechanics, grips, and leverage principles that apply across positions. Teaches how to troubleshoot common escapes and transitions between juji variations, so you’re always moving toward a finish. Great mix of structured instruction and real rolling footage with commentary—makes techniques feel usable rather than just theoretical. If you want a system you can build on instead of a series of highlights, this instructional delivers big. It’s packed with layers you’ll revisit again and again as your armbar timing and comprehension grow.
Great video
Awesome
Armbar Mastery Without Needing to Be a Gymnast Gordon Ryan’s Systematically Attacking The Arm Bar breaks down one of jiu-jitsu’s most iconic submissions with the kind of precision and structure that makes you wonder why you ever struggled with it in the first place. As a 50-year-old grappler whose flexibility retired sometime in the early 2000s, I really appreciated how Gordon focuses on control, pressure, and predictable reactions rather than athleticism. Gordon shows every phase of the armbar like a complete system—how to isolate the arm, secure the body, destroy defenses, and finish with ruthless efficiency. It’s the kind of detail that makes your armbar percentage jump almost immediately… and makes your training partners a lot more nervous. What I loved: Clear, methodical steps to lock down the arm, even against strong resistance. Focus on mechanics over flexibility, perfect for older grapplers who bend less and think more. Tons of details on preventing escapes, so once you enter the armbar… it’s pretty much over. Makes the armbar feel less like a “move” and more like a mechanical trap your opponent walks into. If you’ve ever struggled finishing armbars or just want a complete system that works regardless of age or athletic ability, this instructional is a must-have. Gordon makes the armbar feel inevitable—and honestly, at my age, having something inevitable on my side feels pretty great.
This video has the best explanations of breaking grips and finishing. As Gordon says it doesn’t focus on entries and there is no Choi Bar section. It really upped my game on separating the hands and finishing.
