The longer I train, the more I appreciate learning concepts that I can apply in many situations. I'd say Wim's work is a great combination of concepts supplemented with specific situations that will give you a widely applicable set of tools that you can use in many scenarios. I'm still scratching the surface, as there is very deep stuff here.
I have seen other "pin escape" dvd's and other defensive bits and pieces on other instructionals but this one is the best. The concepts are easy to remember when you are under a big guy trying to escape. Instead of showing 100 escapes, he shows you simple concepts, variations and examples. It starts a little scattered and long winded but it all clicks and does not get boring.
Wim Deputter increases your defensive game with the mirroring principle and baby bridge. Tried, tested, and frustrating to your training partners! I recommend taking a look at this one.
Wim's concept on mirroring is something I've never seen before, I'm still playing around with it but I can say even just a few of his concepts helped me while in side control last week, I was pinned and getting smashed, felt the awful suffocating feeling coming on but just by implementing baby bridging that pressure was gone or at least made manageable I believe I would of gotten to my knees if the buzzer hadn't sounded. This series will require multiple viewings and even more on the mat practice to get the feel of the movements required but it's looking like a game changer at this point, really looking forward to getting a solid understanding of it.
Wim lives 30min from my home town, and I never attended one of his classes. Seeing his approach in these videos, I regret this. He has found a way to explain the basic mechanics in such a clear and simple way every beginning student has to understand. I am changing a few things in my way of teaching immediately. Tnx Wim!
I'm a brown belt from Holland, luckily to have been able to train with Wim on multiple occasions. Like in real life, this DVD really shows his very detailed teacher skills. Even though i have been training for almost 10 years now, this series still showed me new basic principles, which never crossed my minds. Like his prof Felipe Costa, his teaching method is very concept based. Dont except 100 different fancy techniques, expect the same concept over and over again, with different outcomes each time.
I am senior black belt from Italy., I've seen them all. Only rarely you find an instructional video that drastically makes you Jiu Jitsu better. This is the case. Buy it.
Wim has some amazing concepts about defense I haven’t seen before. This is less about specific techniques and more about conceptual ideas on how to stay safe. It’s original, makes a lot of sense, and the information is conveyed in an understandable fashion. It’s obvious he is a master teacher. I can’t wait for more!
I have been following Wim for a while and sometimes i also train in his gym. It is always learning when you roll with Wim. I strongly believe in Wim's philosophy and vision of BJJ. In the dvd, Wim explains very well how the body should move in different positions. It's all about getting the body in the right position without force but whit pressure or contact with your opponent. Let the body move as naturally as possible ensuring that you lie comfortably. Since i use Wim's tips i also train injury free for a long time. The dvd is definitely recommended for every level, if you have the chance to train with him, definitely do!! Thank you Wim for sharing your tips and for the hospitality every time i come train with you! See you soon.
Love this instructional video. Prof Wim is really good at explaining how the body works. Just some simple adjustment using baby bridge at bottom side control and I can see a HUGE difference in energy efficiency (rolled in gi). And this is just a part of his instructional! This together with Prof Leite's coyote half guard as well as Prof Priit's turtle and panda series is a good combination! Again just like my other review as an improvement would be nice if there are angles or grips that can be "zoomed in" to get a better view but otherwise this is a good purchase, I learned a lot from this instructional.
I have started with BJJ 8 months ago. At the beginning I struggled with understanding what is really going on. I had problems applying techniques as I was always overreacting by trying to be the strong leading guy. Also I knew how to do some stuff but I never get to do the techniques. After visiting a seminar with wim I learned to think and look on BJJ in terms of concepts. The mirroring helps me to concentrate more on my partner's reactions. Afterwards I purchased The DVD to get an opportunity to look Things up. And wim is delivering detailed techniques and concepts with his thoughts. I am just at the beginning of my journey but Afterwards I could relax more while training and even apply some techniques on my partner. This was even recognized by my coach and I was rewarded with 3 stripes. Big thanks to wim
I have been fortunate to visit and train with Wim at his gym in Belgium last year. It is there where he introduced me to his mirroring system. In that week I basically got a crash course and I did was not able to retain many of the key details. That's why I decided to get this DVD. Mirroring really is a complete system because you can apply its principles in multiple areas of your game. Seeing it in action really opened my mind and solidified my understanding of the fact that there are multiple solutions to solve problems in BJJ. I feel that Wim's system provides the most efficient solutions. It relies purely on technique and allows you to use the movements of your opponent to take advantageous positions. I am positive that I have seen other practitioners use similar techniques, but I have never seen anybody teach them. Speaking of teaching - it is definitely something that Wim excels at. The information is presented very clearly , without going out on the tangents or side-tracking. I could write a whole essay on why you should give this system a try, but in short - it will completely change your game. So get the DVD and visit Wim's gym near Brussels if you ever get an opportunity!
I knew this was going to be a quality instructional because I know about Wim (one of most important Bjj black belts in Europe, one of the best pressure passers today) but it was more than just good. His “mirroring principle” is common sensical but unique at the same time and his baby bridge, in conjunction with the mirror fighting, is a good reminder that shrimping in the traditional way will get you beat up both in tourneys and real life. If you’re new to Bjj, the mirroring principle will give you an efficient direction to go in every situation you will encounter. If you’re a seasoned black belt and want to stop giving up three points when your gaurd starts to die, then for sure watch. I imagine the best group to pick is up is (gonna sound random) wrestlers transitioning to Bjj or mma who do not want to waste time learning the overused and archaic Bjj escapes that rarely work in real competition. This instructional will not teach you to unlearn wrestling but, instead, maximize good wrestling in Bjj Self-defense and competition.
This is fantastic if you may be in a rut and are looking for some A-Z ideas dealing with little details of which arm leads when, and centerline in a grappling context among other things that are certainly fresh in the instructional video sense but maybe in general depending who you learn from. I say 5 stars easy for creativity alone, and extra points for usable well explained technique.
As a white belt I often felt as though it was 'game over' as soon as my opponent, especially a higher belt or just a heavier opponent, would pass my guard or achieve an advantageous position over me. Wim Deputter proves anyone who thinks that way wrong, big time. These are the foundations you need to turn defence into attack. The beauty of Wim Deputter's system is that it's useful for any level of bjj practitioning. And Wim Deputter never loses touch with the self defence aspect of bjj, which is absolutely a plus for me personally.
This is not your typical instructional with 40-75 static techniques from specific positions and grips. This is a conceptually applied idea not only to escapes from side control but to martial arts in general. It is a master class in controlling distance to allow for functional escapes while keeping your body in safe positions. This concept of the baby bridge and outside and inside shoulder escape is unlike other systems I’ve ever seen. I have just started playing with these concepts but can already feel the strength in these concepts. It is what great escape artists do but Wim has defined it and created some guidelines. Highly recommended.
This instructionnal is great! Wim's concepts are easy to understand and already helped me improve my game. Like anything, it takes practice to master but when I manage to implement it, bjj becomes easy and my postures feel powerful. Wim is the only one I found that articulate clearly the mechanisms behind timing, connection and movements. It really helped me understand better the overall bjj game and I feel like I won't need much more fundamental instructionnals after that. I'm looking forward to his next videos!
This is a truly unique instructional and way ahead of its time. While most jiu jiteros are stuck at the "technique vs. technique" mentality, Wim teaches movement instead of moves. Wim teaches also timing. Ever heard of "the right move at the wrong time is the wrong move" ? Well, that's exactly what makes the mirroring principle unique. You'll most likely spend years on the mat before you develope an intuitve understand of when to do what, or you can learn the mirroring principle and jump time.
Wow,phenomenal dvd set,i was expecting it to be good because i had seen Wims camp YouTube clips but this set has blown me away. I am a 10 plus years(purple belt) in bjj and this set along with Priits sets has totally changed my game and more importantly my understanding of BJJ. I recommend Wims set if you want to improve your bottom game greatly, the best thing is it is all about postures and not attributes driven so i could see this material working great for older grapplers. Anyway highly recommend, game changer, cheers James
I’ve had the chance to train with Wim. He practices what he preaches. His game is truly effortless and he wears out more athletic players at the highest level, thanks to his deep understanding of connection, posture and framing. And while it does take a mental effort, especially to ‘unlearn’ some of the things you were not doing correctly enough, I believe this approach can be learned by anyone who is willing to put his or her mind to it, with great returns.
Wim Deputter released some revolutionary concept based work here. He has a unique approach to link structure/posture - function/movement - timing/mirroring in a grappling scenario. One of the main things is connection by meeting pressure with pressure so one can learn to work from defensive scenarios into offensive scenarios using the same movement patterns so defense and offense are not separate from each other ... like in wrestling. The movement pattern itself stems from early childhood development: How a baby starts the process of standing up by babybridgeing/arching and slowly works the way up to the knees and standing by a sequence that constantly allows stability and balance. i'm having a lot of fun applying the concepts in rolling and i'm really looking forward to what's coming next by Wim.
I'm a total bjj noob. I love the functional teaching style. Would recommend this if you're interested in a techn. that works even when I manage to do it. I feel there's even a lot of good information if you know what you agree doing, unlike me.
Wims instructional to the 'Mirroring Principle and The Baby Bridge' helps me to develop a deeper understanding about the movements and mechanics in BJJ. He teaches in a unique way to always be connected to your opponent, that gives you the possibility to act/react accordingly to what your opponent is doing next. I much appreciate his didactical way of teaching BJJ. He shows you a principle that makes your BJJ way better. My conclusion: Highly recommended!
Great stuff! All of Wim's videos, seminars, etc. are extremely innovative and helpful. Highly recommend his videos!
This is one of the most innovative concepts I ever trained on. It puts the traditional hip escape in question, and way more!
