I have really enjoyed this video, and I think it is the result of careful observation and experimentation. That Richardson has developed truly effective techniques in a life-or-death struggle with a modern edged weapon has proof in a conundrum he briefly alludes to in the video--viz., why certain techniques seen in medieval European manuscripts don't quite cut the mustard modernly. I did some research, and I have found the reasons why. First, medieval European clothing was quite thick, consisting of wool and leather. Seondly, to get through these materials, sharply pointed daggers were required, These daggers (bullocks and rondel) were not edged and were quite long, thus leading to different, often immediate disarms. The great medieval Italian martial artist Fiore dei Liberi created a well-known treatise on dagger fighting, In it, he shows different defenses illustrated by masters (fellows wearing crowns). Richardson's defense is a hybrid of Masters Six and Seven (if I remember correctly). Then it dawned on me that through trial and error, Richardson has come up with THE defense for the modern knife that is edged and markedly shorter that its medieval counterparts. Weapons determine tactics, and a change in technique (tactics) was absolutely necessary because of a change in weapons. That Richardson developed a subtle change in technique through intense empiricism to a change in the weapon convinces of the validity of his efforts.
I reccomend this video series about the knife fighting it is very honest about the self defense against the knife , very dettailed and possibile will open your mind about knife fighting and modern self defense .
The best tutorial for the topic i know. Burton is a passionate martial artist.
I love the way Burton Richardson breaks everything down in such an understandable way. He is a great teacher and I am devouring his videos. Thanks and keep these coming!
I've studied a number of knife defenses before. It's amazing to see how there are very different approaches to dealing with the knife. There are so many positions. In all the previous ones that I've studied, I always had doubts. This knife defense system that's being taught by Burton is outstanding. He is always honest about his techniques. He has taught in this course the pros and cons of each existing defense system, including the ***** in his armor as well as its remedies. What I like the most with his system is that it's all pressure tested. In this course, he will share sparring drills that will reveal the effectiveness of the style. It's an all out sparring, the closest but safest possible to a real knife attack scenario. This is a far cry from the silliness of most other trainings out there which will give one false confidence, costing one's life when actually attacked in the real world by uncooperative attackers. Knife defenses: 1. Run/escape - this is touched here, but not trained. C'mon, anyone can just train by sprinting every morning. Better yet, study parkour, but parkour isn't included in this instructional obviously. 2. Grapple with the knife - PRIMARY defense, very important and essential skill that everyone must and can acquire, regardless of strength and size. This is the focus of this instructional. EXCELLENT training, comprehensively covered here. 3. Strike the attacker - merely secondary and complementary. This has lower percentage of success, but may also come in handy. Barely discussed here. Just train Boxing or Muay Thai at some other place as a SUPPLEMENT to this course. This is my 2nd instructional from Burton. I wish I could meet him someday! Really good guy.
The realistic approach taken in this video series relative to the brutal nature of a short bladed weapon is something I've seen elsewhere: medieval European fighting treatises. You see, for example, the same two-handed control strategies on the attacking arm that prevent a reciprocal action and hand-offs. If you see the same or similar techniques once used in a world in which the King of France had to ban pointed knives at dinner parties due to the ****** and mayhem, you're looking at a course that's on the right track. Even in BJJ instruction where self-defense remains the primary focus--for example, those schools that trace their lineage back to Helio Gracie--dealing with weapons of any kind receives only minimal treatment. Knife defenses are few and trained in a highly unrealistic manner. This work is a major step in addressing this deficiency.
Richardson gives a no-BS look at real world defense vs the knife. Best vid of its kind I have seen.
Its refreshing to see real, pressure tested techniques being taught by a one of the best instructors out there. Burton is the real deal, I've had the pleasure of attending many seminars and meeting many top notch instructors over my 40+ year martial arts journey and I can say that Burton Richardson is one of the most down to earth, no fluff, , top notch, as real as they get instructors available. These videos are great, and would be a plus for anyone looking for real, pressure tested strategies for dealing with edged weapons in a self defense situation. Highly recommended.
Nice to see a reality knife defense course like this on BJJFanatics. So much bull out there. You can see that Burton Richardson really gives you the real deal on this one.
As a BJJ practitioner and especially as a black belt this instructional series really allows you to easily adapt your jiujitsu skills into a practical way to defend against a realistic knife attack. Highly recommend Burton Richardson's work for realistic street applications.
I have pressure tested this technique of stopping a knife and it does work. I have not found anything more reliable.
This is the type of video that can make the difference in a bad situation. It is real self defense that could safe your life or someone else’s. Check our ego and put in the work.
A really difficult thing that Burton analyze under pressure testing like he correctly says. His course is one of the best way that I've watched to try to survive to this really bad situation that never comes easy. You better not see yourself in it! With Burton you're gonna enjoy and learn without doubt 👍👍
A serious topic presented with humor, honesty and no ego. Great concepts that come from a master of Filipino martial arts, JKD, and BJJ... His preferred method to deal with a knife might surprise you. If you're an LEO... This is a MUST.
He gets back to the core of what we really need, No BS Self-defense, nothing flashy just basics that work. The video gives a nice breakdown for each section. Anything that Burton releases I will watch because he releases gold :first_place_medal:
Realistic and practical applications that can be used to save your life. Great book and video, I highly recommend them both.
Great stuff. Anybody know where to find that yellow rubber knife he uses?
Burton Richardson present a very difficult subject in a very clear, reasoned and practical manner. It is straightforward to test and practice the positions, transitions and drills. The instructionl is well structured and the material presented in a progressive manner
Not a bad instructional opens eyes up and gives some good instruction. One negative on first part 1 talks too much showing clips of real attacks . More instruction would have been better. Carl
I loved this video, no matter how many years you have trained I believe knife defense is something most styles taught in a unrealistic way and Burton shows real examples of fights go . I knew some good techniques from Krav Maga but after the grips review I found out baseball grip is probably the best option. I have many DVDs from this site but seriously, leave your ego somewhere else and learn from this one because even a kid with a big knife can **** you, no matter which belt you are.
Burton Richardson consistently provides some of the best, battle-tested material for effective street self-defense (empty hands or weapons) If you are at all serious about self-defense ... you can not afford to ignore this aspect of reality and just limit your skills to a scenario that doesn’t include defense against edged weapons.
Detailed technique breakdown, and application of those techniques is informative, really good!
Realistic approach to dealing with an attacker with a knife when escape is not an option. Honest about the extreme difficulty of surviving such encounters. Refreshing change to the usual Hollywood fantasies.
