• A balanced review from someone who tries what he says in training

  Pros: - I see the pros using this stance but they never talk about it. That Priit is actually explaining what they haven't explained yet is nice and illuminating. - It ties into his other systems - It seems really cool Cons: - I've been trying this in training and just get my guard passed so quickly. It's really hard to apply right away with success. I end up in other situations than this one. I think this is a very short transitional stance, so it's very high level and nuanced to study this. - Priit is much bigger than his training partner, which takes away credibility in my opinion, because everything is harder when your training partner is 50% bigger than you, and way easier when they're 50% smaller than you. I know this is just for demonstration, but when he's using such a smaller uke, it does shake my faith in what he's teaching. Just being honest, sorry. - I think it's not clear what the exact guards and sweeps you are supposed to go for from this position. He explains a lot about guard retention, but not so much goes into what attacks I should do and how to complete them. - The sound breaks up sometimes and you lose his voice.

  This instructional is the perfect msrh up to the grilled chicken guard retention. It is about retention stsnd ups and takedowns. About backtakes and sweeps. And of course how it fits into his defensive concept Highly recommend!!

• Unlocks so much potential

  Full disclosure -- I am a huge fan of all of Pritt's work. I have all of his dvds and I've built my game around his "system." But I have alwyas had a very defensive game (I am a much older player at 62), .and young wrestlers would eagerly try to crash. any guard I played. Now the sideways open guard has transformed my game because it allows me to be offensive from a very safe range and slow down very aggressive partners. The guard has adds a new, outer layer to my defense in depth (to borrow a computer security phrase) . Surprisingly, I have also found some sneaky wristlock entries from here. The guard also links extremely well to street fighting -- the sideways open guard is one of the grounding fighting positions in Krav Maga (I am a 2nd deg BB). Most importantly, this is an extremely fun guard to play -- for both training partners. No matter what guard you favor, the sideways open guard links to that seamlessly. Can't recommend this instructional enough.
