• This is a classic for good reasons (long review)

  Volumes 1 and 2 teach the core of Lucas Leite half guard GI game; volume 3 teaches getting to the opponent’s back (GI) from various positions (i.e., the opponent is on their back, in sitting guard, and the turtle), several submissions from the back and maintaining back control; and volume 4 covers half guard material for NO GI. For half guard there is a focus on commencing with a knee shield, hooking the opponent’s leg to create pressure on their knee and to come to the dogfight position (aka the Coyote position) to a sweep or move to the opponent’s back. Additionally, in volumes 1 and 2 techniques are taught to stop your opponent passing your half guard and how to enter half guard from various positions. The instructional has a total runtime of 3 hours and 25 minutes. In my opinion Lucas Leite’s teaching is excellent. His instructions are clear and focused. Unfortunately, a detraction in this instructional for me, was when performing techniques Lucas Leite didn’t seem to consistently have a good sense of what the camera lens was capturing (note this was his first BJJ Fanatics instructional and the camera operator also had a responsibility in this regard). Techniques are repeated generally three times and the repetitions don’t always complement each other for filming purposes. In my experience the techniques taught work and importantly Lucas Leite also teaches alternative techniques for changing circumstances. In respect of video quality, range could have been better (i.e., focusing on the instructor and uke and having less studio background) and as noted above at times the camera angle could have been better (i.e., sometimes for a technique demonstration the film footage does not show clearly what is being described, such as situations where the demonstrations are focused on one side of the body). Filming quality would have been improved if close ups and optimal filming angles had been used to ensure all the necessary limb positions and movements were clearly captured. Other than the regular cough from the cameraman, which is audible in the preview, sound quality is good. The instructional appears to have been filmed at the BJJ Fanatics studio. In summary, setting aside some of the identified filming issues this is an excellent instructional to purchase because of the techniques taught and the quality of the instruction. You will be rewarded if you carefully watch, engage and practice the techniques taught in this instructional. If so, in my experience you will improve your half guard game and increase your confidence on being on the bottom. This is a classic BJJ instructional and definitely worth adding to your BJJ video library.

• Awesome Half Guard Instructional

  This was the first instructional I ever purchased on BJJ Fanatics. I was going back and reviewing some of my other earlier instructionals, and I remembered this one. When I purchased it, I really studied it and added most of the concepts to my half guard game most of which I still use today. If you're looking for a systematic approach to half guard, this can be a standalone approach.
