Roger is the true heir of Gracie jj… basic and perfect
Learn from the best
Pure gold from one of the BJJs best!
Great instructional, fundamentals that have gotten me through a good few matches!
Great Information from Roger. Highly recommend! Not as systematic as other instructional, but still very good details.
Really helpful system. It improved my guard retention, sweeps and submissions from closed guard.
Learn from the best, Roger's game works at every weight and skill level
Roger has a way of making these techniques instantly applicable in live rolls. My closed guard was pretty worthless before purchased and applied his instructions. Highly recommended!
Great for those who like fighting from guard or anyone looking to improve and become more comfortable being in guard. Goes over great transitions from guard, attacks, etc.
Simple bjj is the best bjj
Simple and old school BJJ demonstrated in world class standart. If you like bottom game definitely a must buy.
In this instructional Roger Gracie teaches closed guard concepts, guard maintenance and a broad range of submissions, sweeps and back takes. The submissions taught include chokes, armlocks, a kimura, a wristlock, and a knee bar. Sweeps taught cover when the opponent is on at least one knee and when they are standing. The instructional is 2 hours and 34 minutes long. For many BJJ instructionals techniques are taught without sufficient time devoted to teaching how to effectively respond to the defensive reactions of the opponent. Ultimately this approach is unhelpful, as in the real world the opponent will actively respond to your technique, particularly when it is a submission. Roger Gracie takes the pragmatic view that your opponent will be trying to defeat your submission attempt and therefore covers in this instructional how to deals with the reactions from the opponent. A good example is in how he teaches the cross collar choke and incorporates the potential impact of the opponent interfering with your second hand. Additionally, in this instructional he discusses pairing techniques e.g., cross collar choke and the armbar. The logic in this example being as the opponent postures back to avoid the choke and provided you are controlling their forward arm you can move directly to an armbar. Note that the first technique (as listed in the contents) is taught in detail and the alternative submission techniques are shown, but not necessarily taught in the same level of detail. In some situations, the alternative submission technique may be taught in detail in a separate chapter. Roger Gracie speaks clearly and can be easily understood. He is focused on the subject matter and there is no banter. He presents professionally and provides the necessary detail to ensure that each technique will work reliably. He shares his opinion of the various techniques and this I found to be useful (e.g., his pragmatic view about the limitations of the scissor sweep). As noted previously he discusses the likely responses from the opponent and how to respond to these actions. In this regard he teaches not to think of one submission technique in isolation, but to have a plan for multiple submission choices depending on the opportunities available. Roger Gracie generally repeats techniques, however there are a few techniques where he demonstrates the technique once. In my opinion this is not a big issue as you can replay techniques, if necessary. In my view picture quality is excellent and sound quality is good. A single camera has been used and the range is excellent, as you can easily see the details of each technique. The available previews are consistent with the whole instructional. In summary, this is an excellent instructional on the closed guard (Gi). The detail, insights and the approaches shared are really useful and this information has the potential, depending on your level of knowledge and experience to noticeably improve your closed guard game (Gi). The next section of the review gives an overview of the content of this instructional by volume, if this interests you. Volume 1 (46 minutes and 6 chapters) includes an introduction to the closed guard (i.e., first priority to keep the guard closed, your opponent wants to open and pass, they don’t really have many opportunities to attack you from the top and they have to defend against your attacks); there is a discussion on guard maintenance with the aim to make it impossible for your opponent to be able to pass in situations where they have at least one knee on the ground and to make it extremely difficult for your opponent to stand up by breaking their posture and Roger Gracie demonstrates how to effectively break the opponent’s posture and how to respond to the opponent’s movement to deny them angle; the first submission taught is the cross collar choke and as noted previously it is taught in depth and covers how to deal with the opponent’s responses to your attack; the second submission is an overhook collar choke initially paired with a triangle choke, if the opponent blocks your second hand from completing the overhook collar choke, however if they use their elbow to trap your leg, then the third attack taught is an armlock applied to the arm trapped by the overhook and if they defend the armlock they will then be open to an omaplata; and the last chapter revisits the collar choke to discuss optimal choking action and a further examination of how to effectively place your hands on the opponent’s collar. Volume 2 (32 minutes and 6 chapters), the techniques taught include the armbar, noting that Roger Gracie teaches a different approach to applying grips compared to many other instructors and spends some time discussing and demonstrating this approach to controlling your opponent’s posture, followed by locking the shoulder and then finally applying the armbar; how to effectively break the opponent’s posture in advance of an armbar; using the lapel to control th
I remember starting out with this guard 8 years ago. Now I revisited it with this instructional and Im glad I did it. I feel that there is certain positions that has the potential to be a near guaranteed "win/tap" over your opponent if you have enough depths of knowledge of it. For me its the Kesa gatame and I feel that studying this DVD has made me more aware of the closed guards depths. Its a very aggressive guard where you can attack with submissions and sweeps and your opponents main goal is to escape.. A certain level of "safe position to attack from" in a way maybe. I look at it in a more aggressive than defensive perspective now.
Superb instructional. Simple and effective techniques but it’s Rogers teaching style, attention to detail and the way he pieces all the concepts together that sets this apart. Recommended for white all the way up to black belt.
As with anything that Roger puts out, it it’s on point with lots of details. Great product.
