John does a great job at explaining complex topics in a simple manner!!!
I'm 45 years old. I started BJJ in 2019 for roughly four months, three nights a week with a group of blue belts during a deployment to Afghanistan. I stopped rolling completely until I started up again in 2023 for three nights a week. After getting crushed for a month, I knew I needed help! Enter John Danaher's (JD's) Guard Retention. I powered through the course in about two weeks but within the first week my guard retention became impassable by white belts and by the next week blue belts couldn't crack JD's code! I've been able to keep a purple belt form passing. It has been a little over a month now since I completed this series and now I either get crushed while in guard by bigger and/or better opponents or I let people pass to half guard to keep it interesting for the less experienced training partners. It's nice to have the option!!! This has taken my game and confidence to another level. I constantly get complimented on my guard retention and so I tell them about JD's amazing coaching! I am currently into JD's Pins and Escapes, another game changer and level up!
This video is the first one I purchased in order to improve my guard retention. This topic was barely covered by my gym, and this instructional helped me tremendously. John Danaher goes into a lot of details, and it is always easy to go back after training to study details.
A absolute must to buy!! John Danahers passing the guard tutorial is a game changer the concepts really made me change my attitude to passing the guard and not engaging on my knees where most threat is
I am about half way through this instructional, and I am already able to implement things to help me retain my guard. A few of my higher belt training partners commented on how much I've improved. Looking forward to getting through the whole lesson.
John’s instructional are really well thought out and his ability to teach concepts along with technique is exceptional. Has already helped my closed guard. Thank you.
Another masterclass from coach John Danaher on the fundamentals of guard retention. Definitely recommend it and looking forward for the No Gi version. Thanks for wisdom coach Danaher 👍:five:⭐️
Lots of details for a white belt
Over 6,5 hrs of well structured instructional.. John Danaher is a master of teaching the techniques so that you can try them as if you had your own coach at home. I can recommend it fully.
Guard retention is complicated. John does a great job of teaching it in a way that is easy to apply quickly without feeling like you have to learn every counter to every guard pass.
improved my guard retention greatly. cant wait to rewatch when i have more experience.
Great video. He explains step by step technique really well but also gives you explains the fundamental concepts in a way that gives you such a great understanding of why your doing the techniques and why they work. This way of teaching is something you don’t get from most instructional.
As per usual, john delivers a fantastic instructional. Another resource I’ll frequently visit to help my game. You can’t go wrong with buying any of johns work, he knows how to deliver it in a way that even though is sometimes dry, you’ll retain it because he goes over the most important parts over and over again.
This series should be required viewing at every gym
Danaher does a great job of breaking down concepts and positions. Would recommend to anyone looking to improve guard retention.
I had no idea why I kept getting smashed and passed. Now I do! Great instructional on one of the hardest parts of the game.
Not every school teaches all the basic moves of guard retention. This will fill in the gaps in your game
John breaks down every aspect of retaining the guard in a high level of detail. This is not an instructional that I would suggest you watch in one sitting. Given the density of the information, it is more beneficial to focus on one section at a time, to allow your mid to digest the knowledge. There is a lot of knowledge to be consumed in here and I think it is a must have for all BJJ practitioners.
Spelndid work as usual by mr Danaher.
This Fundamentals series are essential for anyone starting at BJJ, it provides a deeper understanding of the techniques which is gold for us analytical-type of practitioners. It is a good purchase. Definitely recommended.
Very well conceived plan of teaching. I really don't think any instructional can be done better then Danaher's ones.
all of danahers instructionals are amazing, but start from the defensive ones! Your game will get better that way
Very detailed and enjoyable to watch.
Worth it
