As always John Danaher provides a range of content, high level and small details. Excellent for all levels.
Very helpful instructional. Teaches alot of underlying theory about positions. Really helps you understand jiu jitsu better.
Watching for the second time - great coverage of details and movements that tie into fundamental concepts.
La biblia de los conceptos de la retención de guardia.
John Danaher’s Guard Retention & Recovery is a methodical, concept-driven breakdown of how to maintain and recover guard against skilled passers. He focuses on key principles—distance, alignment, and layered defenses—before moving into specific recoveries for common passing situations. The pacing is slow and analytical, which makes it ideal for students who enjoy understanding the “why” behind every movement. While beginners might find the depth overwhelming, it’s an invaluable long-term reference for serious practitioners. Overall, it’s a masterclass in turning guard retention into a structured, repeatable skill.
Guard retention should be a focus of all white-blue belts. This is a great course to really study.
Fantastic skill to focus on with such great instructions.
I’ve had John Danaher’s videos for a long time. When my technique goes off course, I always refer to his specific videos. I’m not athletic, 65 yr old, two injured knees for 30 years. I’ll never quit jiu jitsu. I’m not as good as other Brown belts and even lower belts but I come back the next day. Danaher teaches what nobody can learn on their own.
Is very easy to follow, Danaher is the best.
Excellent instructional!
Would get stuck in Mount and Side Control all the time. This helps to get something out of your rolls

I'm so grateful to Mr Danaher!
Been watching john for years and he never fails to deliver.
This is one of the must haves from this series.
This series gives a good practical breakdown of the theoretical & practical applications of maintaining guard.
Best teacher out there. Always great attention to detail and very practical in application.
Being new to BJJ, this gives me direction in my development
Although I recently received my blue belt after training for over two years as a white belt, I felt somewhat undeserving of my promotion. However, this course quickly revealed that my skills were more developed than I realized; I simply needed guidance to refine them and become a more formidable opponent. From the foundational principles taught, I've seen a significant improvement in my Jiu-Jitsu game. John Danaher's wealth of knowledge is truly impressive, and I found myself wishing the course included subtitles to fully capture every detail he shared. Despite this, the course is exceptionally well-structured and has dramatically enhanced my guard play, while also highlighting areas for future development. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to elevate their Jiu-Jitsu skills.
Great stuff
Impossible to aquire this knowledge in your average gym
Ton of detail about retention
Always practical and straightforward. Keep center line with opponent in order to keep guard. Framing with hands and pushing with feet.
