Great resource for everyone who is interested in the more 'old school' hidden jiu jitsu. Get it together with professor Akins 'Weight Distribution' and 'Connection' instructionals!
Excellent course. Thank you, Henry.
Henry Akins is a very good teacher, and this video helped me to be understand what instructors have in mind when they say to relax (beyond simply not spazzing).
I have been training like this for a while. Mainly because of guys like Priit Mihkelson's Defensive BJJ. But this instructional really emphasizes the omportance of being relaxed, which is not an option for older grapplers, it is essential. In my 60's, I choose my training partners wisely, but being relaxed through a roll allows me to do 10-minute rounds without really using too much energy. Being like a waterbed in top side is demoralizing and makes grappling fun again.
In BJJ you often hear conventional wisdom like "there are no secrets, just train." That couldn't be further from the truth. This is the closest thing to an actual cheat code for getting better at Jiu-Jitsu you'll find.
Relaxation so simple , so profound and so game changing. The challenge is do do this when someone is trying to escape, pin or submit you. Henry demonstrates primarily in relation to pinning but makes the point that relaxation needs to underpin everything you do and that mastery is when you can dominate using only 10% effort.
Lots of teaching of concepts. Worth it in my opinion but not for everyone. I could listen to Akins chat about jiujitsu concepts forever. I hope he does more like this.
Great mindsets and I’m getting better tthose mindsets because I’m getting older.
