One of the best, if not the best, resources for X guard. You would be doing yourself a disservice if you *didn't* buy this.
Not gonna lie, I had no idea who Satava was so getting this felt like a gamble but it was well worth the money. The details about the various sweeps and how to connect them have been helpful and the teaching format is concise with no time wasted repeating things that could just be rewinded. Overall this instructional has made me familiar X guard in a way that watching YouTube just hasn't done. My only gripe is that I didn't buy this sooner, 10/10
It was awesome. Nicely formatted. It had everything that I was looking for. I mainly play butterfly and half, and wanted something more to expand my guard, and knowing how butterfly connects to x guard this was just exactly what I was looking for. Cohesive information, very well laid out, and more importantly the instructor was easy to understand. Would 10/10 recommend. Oss!
Excellent instructional. Satava goes into depth about each move while keeping the pace of the instructional. No long monologues, he does not repeat himself, but he doesn't rush neither. In other words, length and depth is about perfect. The instructional has basically three parts: entries, how to maintain the guard (i.e. counters to counters), and sweeps.
I thoroughly enjoyed this instructional. I am constantly on youtube and instagram where I follow some of the most creative and successful competitors and instructors. Even still I learned a lot. The instructional not only covers techniques but their context based on your opponent's defensive reactions or offensive mistakes. Instructor Satava explains essential details thoroughly in a clear and concise way. I have every intention of purchasing his butterfly guard instructional.
All I can say is WOW! The instructions are precise, Jon is easy to listen to and he doesn't bore you with long explanations that put you to sleep. It is to the point and precise. No details are left out and I am able to hit these moves live after very little time drilling them. This along with his Butterfly instructional is taking my game to new heights and I'm loving every minute of it.
Sooo good instruction.
great video
First of all, the techniques are excellent! However the best thing about Jon's X guard DVD is the way he formatted the techniques. The first two volumes are about how to get to the single X and full X guard from different positions. Jon goes even deeper and talks about a position he calls the "switch X". It's a position that I've certainly overlooked for a long time. I'm sure we've all seem Marcelo use it but at least for me, I've had no idea how important it was! The third volume is my favorite. It is 50 minutes of how to keep the single X and X guard depending on what your opponent does. As Jon is showing the moves, he would go over some competition stories and examples to help the audience further understand why certain things should be done. The last volume is a large selection of sweeps with very nice details. The bottom line is, it's a really damn good set of instructional dvd.
I first met Jonathan back in 2017 during a trip to Marcelo Garcia's gym. Sparring with Jonathan was like trying to catch a wave with an already wet towel which made me want more. Not just because he was smothering me or that he was doing so with seemingly little effort but because he was always happy to answer what ever questions I had afterwards. Not only did he answer them but he went above and beyond going into the finer details explaining everything to a tee to a complete stranger at the time. In 2019 I visited the states again and made sure to spend a few days at Johns gym, Peak jiu-jitsu. I could have spend those days at Marcelo's, Renzo's, Vitors or any of the 10 other gyms available with world class competitors but I didn't because not only is Jonathan a world class competitor but he is also a world class teacher. I cannot recommend his instructional's enough as he just like in real life, shows you all the finer details which will elevate your techniques and executions hereof to new levels. Everybody has their favorites and favorite styles of teaching/learning and for me this is as good as it gets. Besides being on the mats with John himself this is the next best thing. would give another star is possible.
