I wanted to find an instructional that went over the keys to defensive posture while also understanding the control points needed to shutdown my opponents guard retention. Very happy with this purchase highly recomended.
A great instructional for improving my defense.
Chris does an amazing job explaining concepts in clear and descriptive ways. Submissions and positioning can become very technical, and he goes in-depth into why a particular defensive move is done in a particular way. Great video!!
I'm a huge fan of Priit Mihkelson and his student black belt, Chris Paines. Although Priit is the originator of these ideas and deserves all the credit, I have to say that Chris is easier to understand due to his teaching style (and having less of a language barrier). This approach to defense is unique. Instead of defending bad positions after you've already been placed in a bad position, why not simply get your opponent out of your space before he can do anything to you? Enter this video and the postures that keep you safe. It's a very good video and I enjoyed watching it.
Chris has the charisma of a TED talk speaker, he really gets his point out there and has a talent for making the information stick. The only other instructors that come to mind are Rener Gracie, and Rob Biernacki. Fantastic and easy to understand, I started teaching Chris' concepts to my tiny white belt student (she's only 105lbs), and after a week I could hardly catch her (I really have to try). I tried the same concepts myself and my survival got better almost instantaneously. Definitely recommend for all levels.
great explanation!
the course is laid out nicely. as an educator, I appreciate the structuring of the lessons. straightforward to follow along and clear explanations.
Chris explanations make BJJ easier to understand and helps me use concepts to work techniques effectively.
I'm always looking to add to my defence and this is a unique and welcome addition! clearly thought out and easy to follow.
Creative escapes
its great learned alot
this is the first time I have heard of the concept of attacking from a defensive position similar to boxing or wrestling. A fresh take on being defensively sound.
simple instructions for big improvement off defensive actions
As a beginner this was a great instructional for my defence that I was able to apply to my game very quickly since Chris Paines breaks it down and explains very simply.
Highly recommend this. Even if Chris himself says that he wouldn't teach some of the concepts here, it's still a gem that prepares you for different bjj journey - an exploration one. Exploration is the fun and sustainable part of grappling for me in the comparison with technique-collecting.
I like that this instructional is more concept heavy. Chris is a great instructor, very clear and easy to follow. He does not waffle on either and gets straight to the point
I found the video to be very impressive. The material and the teaching were great. He introduces concepts and ways to look at BJJ that I hadn’t utilized before. As a white belt, I find I’m always working on my defense and this will help elevate my game.
This is a great instructional. Chris does a great job breaking down the ideas behind keeping your elbows tight, how submissions work, and more! Really great if you are working on building up your conceptual knowledge of ju-jitsu!
Great instructional
awesome content
Practical defensive concepts. I have already tried the arm bar counters at my gym. While it looks funny at first - they work!
Chris Paines developed an outstanding instructional about the foundation of instructional provided by postural and positional concepts for protection and defense. He was able to categorize all kinds of guards into inside and outside guards and a hybrid - half guard. He points out cristal clear what you have to be aware of within each kind form bottom and top perspective. His approach of minor and major control in terms of submission holds and chokels catches all key points in a very obvious way and easy to follow too. In terms of protecting and defending from bottom he uses the compass principle to illustrate how you always can be prepared to make the right choice in terms where to move. His concept of backwards drilling means starting from the submission joint/lock and work your way back to the entries and his approach of reverse drilling which basically means to guide your training partner through the technique you would like to explore so that you are able to fell all the differences between the different stages and levels of conrol up to the finish. If you like professor Priit Mihkelson you wll love this instructional!!!
Excellent material and teaching. A must have for anyone looking to improve the defensive portion of their game.
Great stuff, learn to use posture and position as your primary defense rather than "moves."
Good instructional!
