The Headhunter Guillotine Series by Neil Melanson
Unfortunately due to Covid lockdowns I have not been able to train. So I got Neil’s head hunter series as guillotines are a weak point of mine. So far it’s easy watching but more importantly it’s reasonably basic to understand. Hopefully we get back on the mats soon so I can put some into practice!

Guide To Not Pulling Guard by Alan Shebaro
I got the privilege of training with Coach Shebaro and can say from first-hand experience his techniques show how to apply jujitsu in the world of real application not just based on sport. Pulling guard in the real world can have serious negative consequences.. He approaches how to manage the situation and take someone down which will expand everyone’s game. This is an excellent knowledge set that will benefit everyone who views.

The Saddle System by Amazon Daisuke and Eddy Panther
Good introduction to leg locks. Watching this allowed me to understand other lengthier instructional. Covered heel hook, ankle lock, calf slice, knee bar, toe hold, aoki lock and introduced entries from back step, kani basami, inversion entries, reverse x, elevation to exotic moves like imanari rolls and tornado sweep to saddle. Well thought out!

Brutal Catch Wrestling Leg Riding and Hammer Locks by Joel Bane
I've been training BJJ for just on 3 years, and in the last year or so have discovered Coach Bane's videos and seen some of his techniques. This video is phenomenal. Superbly efficient techniques with extreme attention to detail. Nothing is rushed through, and after trying some of these out with partners can personally attest to the pain and efficiency of them. Hoping we see a lot more of Coach Bane on BJJ Fanatics. Absolutely brilliant. Must have.

Judo Gripping Systems For BJJ by Fernando Yamasaki
This is by far the best instructional for the money on BJJ Fanatics. Fernando Yamasaki goes into detail about grip fighting and teaches some very good ashi waza techniques. I hope Sensei Yamasaki makes more instructionals of this caliber.

Dynamic De La Riva Guard by Otavio Sousa
The techniques shown in this instructional is the exact same techniques Otavio Sousa uses in his competition. Same techniques that won him 3 world championships. Sousa is incredibly athletic but the techniques he shown doesn't require athleticism or flexibility. His sit up guard is what made me pull the trigger on his instructional and I was not disappointed. Everyone can benefit from white belt to black belt.

Response from BJJ Fanatics:hugging::call_me_hand::skin-tone-2:Thorough coverage of the omoplata – entering, submitting and including countering the defences to the omoplata (long Review)
Automatic Omoplata System by Clark Gracie
In this instructional Clark Gracie provides a comprehensive study of the omoplata including an introduction, a range of “fundamental and intermediate” entries, reliably finishing the submission and a range of complementary techniques. The instructional runs for 2 hours 6 minutes and consists of 24 chapters. Vol 1 (30 minutes) covers teaching the basic omoplata and then a series of entries including open guard when the opponent is kneeling; spider guard when the opponent is standing; and closed guard from both the flower sweep and the elevator sweep / single hook sweep. Vo 2 (36 minutes) teaches from the closed guard a backwards rolling sweep to side control with the potential to enter a triangle depending on where the opponent places their arms or if they attempt to defend the sweep you can move to an omoplata; a closed guard entry from compromising the opponent’s posture; and a series a submission transitions, triangle from guard and several armbars from guard and side control where the initial submission is failing to a successful omoplata or modifying the initial submission to make it work (e.g. triangle to reverse triangle). Vol 3 (22 minutes) teaches how to address omoplata counters including when the opponent postures up using their free arm during the early stages of the technique; again, posturing up but instead of using their free arm using their opposite leg; and posturing up with the opposite leg and also grabbing your extended leg providing the opponent with opportunities for a toe hold or to assist in their posturing and escaping. The second part of this volume teaches three omoplata entries from the De La Riva guard. Vol 4 (38 minutes) teaches several omoplata techniques from the lasso guard (opponent kneeling and standing); how to counter when an opponent attempts to roll out of an omoplata; a drill for developing your omoplata skills; and an introduction to a technique called the pretzelplata. In summary, the pretzelplata is taught from lasso and involves sweeping your opponent so that they end up face down with their far leg under their body with this leg resting on your lap and with their near arm in an omoplata. Clark Gracie is clearly very knowledgeable about the omoplata. His instructions are clear and to the point. He clearly demonstrates and narrates each of the techniques. As is usual, all the techniques are repeated from different angles. In my opinion this is an easy instruction to watch and it flows logically from technique to technique. Overall, the range, quality of the vision and sound is good. A single fixed camera has been used and the range of the camera is good. The available preview is consistent with the whole instructional. In summary, this is an excellent instructional on the omoplata and if you are looking to broaden your range of submissions then this would be a worthwhile instructional to purchase.
Important refinements for Half Guard
Visible Jiu Jitsu: The Half Guard System by Bruno Bastos
The Bastos half-guard system is important for anyone attacking from half guard or defending against a half-guard player. Developed over decades on the competition mats, these techniques are well tested. Highly recommend this series.
Response from BJJ Fanatics:hugging::call_me_hand::skin-tone-2:Very short and narrow in scope
Funky Wrestling Reversals by Ben Askren
The instruction is very short (45 min with realistically about 20 minutes of actual material) and covers only around 4-5 moves with some minor variations. Ben usually only shows the move once, and then spends more time talking about it then showing how it is done. He does give good explanations for why he does what he does, but nothing in the instructional is anything extremely esoteric. Neither good nor bad, but this instruction is targeted for wrestling rules, and not BJJ. If any BJJers or submission grapplers are interested. Using these techniques can have value in submission grappling, but you need to be conscious that you may be exposing yourself for techniques which are not legal or preferred under folkstyle/freestyle rules. There are better wrestling for BJJ instructionals out there.
Buzzaw vid tips worked for me!
Buzzsaw Passing: No Gi by Andrew Wiltse
I bought a few other vids from BJJ Fanatics and they were more difficult to implement straight into my rolling without 1 on 1 drills as a supplement. For Wiltse's video I was able to go straight from my home bjj ***** to the club and I found that the first Buzzaw pass techniqued was working for me right away in rolling! I also found Andrew's voice was loud anough and entertaining enough to keep me engaged. The only minor critique would be he throws a handful of F-bombs (or swears) in the dialogue; I don't mind but Andrew may want to consider his potential Family, children, or religious listeners on future videos. Thanks!

Proven Partner Drills For Striking Success by Kirian Fitzgibbons
This is arguably the best striking program that I've ever come across, and I've seen quite a few. Coach Kirian is straight and to the point in all of his lessons, and more importantly the program is expertly organized. Everything is easy to learn and remember, you won't be left with any doubts when sharing this with your MMA striking or kickboxing class. All of the drills are practical and are designed to promote expert-level technical skills, in a safe and progressive manner. When Coach does talk, he shares with you his winning philosophy and attitude which has made his gym and team a success. This series is completely worth every penny and any striking coach would do well to invest in this program for their team!

Response from BJJ Fanatics:hugging::call_me_hand::skin-tone-2:A good introduction to the cross-collar sleeve guard, De La Riva guard and lasso guard (Long Review)
The Flow Chart System Open Guard Part 1 by Eric Laporte
If you want to leave the safety of the closed guard and start working your open guard then this instructional is a great way to learn a range of techniques from three open guards including cross-collar sleeve, De La Riva and lasso. The instructional teaches the fundamental techniques (Gi) including entering the guard and controlling the opponent and a range of sweeps and submissions. Overall, in terms of the submissions taught they include armbars, a canto style choke, a triangle choke, an omoplata, a kneebar, heel hooks, a toe hold, an ankle lock, a bicep slicer and a wrist lock. Also provided with the instructional is a pdf file designed to assist with your learning. The pdf comprises a series of flowcharts for each of the three guards showing you how to navigate the techniques taught in the instructional (e.g., from a specific guard with the opponent standing what are your choices, etc). The instructional runs for 4 hours 12 minutes and consists of 54 chapters. Eric Laporte teaches in a relaxed manner. He commences the instructional teaching open guard fundamentals (i.e., efficient movement, staying in contact with the opponent, and a quick introduction to open guard retention) and how to effectively break your opponent’s grips. For the first two guards Eric Laporte approaches the topic by firstly teaching the fundamentals and then teaching techniques dependent on what position the opponent is in (i.e., kneeling or standing for CCSG and when their weight is forward or backward for the DLR). For the lasso once the fundamentals have been addressed, he teaches techniques based on whether you are on your side or back. Eric Laporte’s instructions are clear, as are the demonstrations. Overall, the quality of the vision is good. Sound is reasonable, noting that Eric Laporte is softly spoken in this instructional. A single fixed camera has been used and the range of the camera is good. The angles of the technique displayed are appropriate. The available previews are consistent with the whole instructional. In summary, in my opinion this is a solid and good value instructional that I found to be a great introduction to the open guard. It has increased my confidence in using the open guard. The techniques taught are effective and not overly complex and nor do they require lots of flexibility or strength.

Junny's Passing The Guard: Outside/Inside Passing, Knee Shield, Chain Passing by Junny Ocasio
Many think of Junny as a pure leglocker. The truth is, Junny's passing game is at least as potent as his leglocks, perhaps even more so. This is why I was so excited to get my hands on his first passing instructional. The content of the instructional is top notch. I appreciate that Junny gives a broad overview of his style of passing while taking the time to hone in on the small details that make it work. This means that a range of practitioners can find value in the instructional. I highly recommend it for both beginner and advanced. BUY IT!

No Gi Berimbolo System Part 1 by Mikey Musumeci
This instructional has the same level of amazing detail that Mikey puts into all his other videos, but it has his best organization yet with larger sections grouped together by the type of control he uses and the small sections being concise and free of repetition. Probably Mikey's best work yet.
