Nice
Mastering No Gi Passing by Travis Stevens
Aight imma be honest I bought this by accident when bjj fanatics gave me the option to upsell after buying Travis's no gi takedowns instructional with a one click purchase that i hit by accident when scrolling (not cool my dudes) but it's pretty neat so I still recommend it and didn't end up refunding it. It's legitimately good especially if like me you like the weave pass and funnelling to it.
Elite

Old school and very effective
The Coyote Half Guard by Lucas Leite
Not much to say. This is old school half guard, but very, very effective. Some great fine details for fine tuning your dogfight and underhook half guard game.

Outstanding
Systematically Attacking From Half Guard by Gordon Ryan
If you're looking for a world class (best in the world) deep dive into specifically a half butterfly system to funnel your opponents into your new wave style leg lock/sumi gaeshi system, this is it. Does cover a bit of half guard, knee shield, and log in the water sweep (lower leg sweep), along with lockdown in deep half (called scorpions here), and they're all good, but the main main focus is on butterfly half into either ashi or sumi gaeshi just as Gordon does in his own matches. Elite stuff. Only downside is it lacks retention.
10/10 quality, but pricey
They Shall Not Pass by Gordon Ryan
Unmatched in quality and detail, an amazing instructional for all levels learning to retain guard better. My one complain is that this really could of been split between Gordon's half guard and 2 open guard instructionals for how much they cost (and how much this costs). It's a goat instructional from the goat cant really complain too much, but particularly the one chapter on half guard should have been in the half guard instructional.
Great value
The Pendejo Guard by Craig Jones
Legit position that just makes sense in no gi. Simple to get to, great set of moves from here, can transition to regular dlr or rdlr (not covered here but pretty easy to work out).
all aspect of half guard
The Guard Passing Anthology: Half Guard by Lachlan Giles
an original and innovative approach, of all the aspect of half guard,
In depth guide to Z guard
Make Z Guard Great Again by Craig Jones
This instructional is really helpful because it has a great focus on retention from z guard. The attacks are great but honestly this helped me most understand how to better pass a low knee shield when on top, and also how to prevent those passes while on bottom. This isn't the be all end all position, and Craig is honest about that, but I mean it's a low knee shield half guard, quite easy to get to, great retention tool, and springboards off into further attacks into the legs or other scrambles. Great stuff.
Great, albeit brief
Good instructional. 4 partz first 2 focus on getting up from turtle and 4 point, second 2 focus on attacking turtle and from top half guard with a focus on wrestling techniques to keep your opponent from "just standing up". Good stuff, wish it went into more detail though and was longer.
Excellent
No Gi Open Guard Volume 3: RDLR & Leg Entanglements by Lachlan Giles
Love it. Great detail on 50/50, 70/30, backside 50/50, and getting there from k guard and rdlr. Great stuff, ties in nicely with the other 2 parts of this series. Refreshing new concepts of outside position guards in no gi if inside position new wave style guards aren't your thing.
So far so good
No Gi Open Guard Volume 1: K Guard by Lachlan Giles
I like. Haven't gone into great depth studying this yet as I'm focusing on other areas, but very keen to eventually learn k guard and Lachlan's outside leg position open guard. Will be learning this after getting comfy in half guard. If you've seen any of Lachlan's other instructionals, know that the quality and style is the same here: great and exceptional value for money.
Essential fundamentals
Fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Escapes Gi & No Gi by Lachlan Giles
Would recommend this as the first instructional to anyone starting out in jits. Escaping and surviving bad positions is probably the first skill to learn in jits considering you'll be getting your butt kicked as a beginner often. As much as I love the new wave approach to escapes (straight into counter offence), I feel this instructional much better suited to beginners and with enough detail to carry you through to higher belts. This covers every position, in gi and no gi, and from memory while it doesn't specifically cover submission escapes it does also come with help remaining defensively responsible to help avoid being subbed while you work out of these positions. And as always, Lachlan's thesis of an instructional is once again super low in price and high in value. Get this.
new video new techniques
The Expanded Coyote Half Guard System Gi by Lucas Leite
after an original and innovative approach, Lucas Leite takes us into his world, from where he continues to amaze
Absolute steal even at full price
The Half Guard Anthology by Lachlan Giles
I don't want to give the man ideas, but Lachlan charges way too little for his instructionals, especially compared to comparatively detailed instructors such as Gordon or Danaher. These aren't quick cash grabs, these are like a darn thesis and labour of love. The actual instructional covers retention from half guard, recover to half guard, recovery from a flat half into a better half guard (usually knee shield or underhook, although butterfly guard and deep half are also positions Lachlan teaches to recover to), and then from there various chapters on offense from Lachlan's preferred half guard positions. Lachlan covers knee levers (john wayne) and high knee shields into the underhook half position, and the bulk of this instructional that I've watched has been focused on attacking from underhook half. Lots of dogfight/roll under stuff but in exceptional detail, and also stuff on what to do when they stand up (such as going to sit up guard and attacks from there). I love how thourough Lachlan is, his combination of concepts, techniques, live footage with commentary, and trouble shooting, all fitting nicely into a systemically approach. This doesn't cover much detail on attacking from butterfly half or deep half, and only minimal stuff from low knee shield, but if high knee shield, underhook, and sit up half guards are your thing, this is an encyclopaedia you will find yourself coming back to again and again.
leg pin passing
The Leg Pin Passing System by Kade & Tye Ruotolo
an original and innovative approach to leg control in the guard pass
Great wrestle up and sumi gaeshi details
New Wave Jiu Jitsu: Open Guard vol 2: Sweeps and Reversals by John Danaher
Great instructional, great concepts. Accidently reviewed the sumi gaeshi part of this instructional in part 1 instead of this one, but to summarise this video is great, the sumi gaeshi info is particularly great.
Great for beginners and advanced
New Wave Jiu Jitsu: Open Guard The two Foundations Of Guard Play by John Danaher
As a beginner I found this instructional very beginner friendly and heavy on the conceptual side of open guard, covering retention, entries into legs and sumi gaeshi, and basic attacks. But I can also see the higher level details and concepts that will be great to revisit as I improve, and that I believe will help upper belts as well. The details on suni gaeshi are particularly great.
Must have
New Wave Jiu Jitsu: A New Philosophy Of Positional Escapes by John Danaher
This is a must have instructional to continue to refer back to again and again. In particular i love how in depth the side control escapes are. Almost all of these escapes dont just put you back into guard, but they put you into realistic counter attacks, and even chain attacks. For example you escape side control with a high leg escape into an arm bar attempt. Admittedly (by John), this arm bar might not catch elite world class guys due to its mechanics, but it forces them to react in a predictable way which chains right into a strong leg attack. The only thing I guess I felt was missing was this didn't go into more detail with the fundamentals (such as basic mount escapes - this focuses on the kipping escape which itself is great but something these fat whitebelt isn't ready for yet). But this isn't a fundamentals instructional, it is all about the new wave philosophy of immediate counter offence. Easy 5 stars for me.
Detailed and Specific - Quite Niche
The Fastest Way: To Become an Effective Guard Passer (No Gi) by John Danaher
This instructional is great and I want to quickly address my review title. I say this instructional is niche because it only focuses on the passing methods John believes are the easiest to learn in a short amount of time to see good results in a speedy fashion. Like his standing2ground and feet to floor instructionals, he isn't covering the entire ocean of techniques in the video topic (here guard passing). For example you won't get a lot of headquarters or inside hamstring passing here. Rather you get a gameplan from the perspective of a new student looking to get good at passing very quickly. This usually means funnelling your passing efforts into forcing and then passing the half guard, although other passes such as body locks, tripod float passes, and concepts such as camping and using mobility passes to take initiative and constantly threaten your opponents J point are also included, and in great detail. Overall this is an excellent and highly, highly detailed instructional as all of Danahers are. My only word of warning would be to anyone looking for a comprehensive guide to every style of passing, because this isn't it. You won't learn the ins and outs of every style of pass here, but if you're looking to get good quick, or otherwise if you've looked at the contents page and you already use some of these techniques and want to go into greater detail on them, I can't recommend enough.
Not just for beginners
Passing the Guard: BJJ Fundamentals - Go Further Faster by John Danaher
Great reminders on principles and small details that can be forgotten or done improperly over the years of training.
Sound, but basic
Mixed Martial Arts Fundamentals by Georges St-Pierre
I like George and I wish I could give him 5 stars, but this instructional seems very, very basic considering the price point and what competitors are offering. The instructional really only covers a list of really basic techniques, and doesn't go into fine details, concepts, or tactics. The actual techniques, along with the production value are great however, and this instructional is called mma FUNDAMENTALS, but considering what is available on this site for the same price, and what is freely available on YouTube, I was left feeling disappointed with this purchase. I love George, I wish him well and no offense with this review, I just don't think it's worth the $98 asking price.
